Running For A Cause

I've been going to one gym or another for nearly half my life. I like it. Pumping iron and racing on the treadmill keeps me physically fit and healthy. But after 15 years of working out, I was getting bored. To make matters worse, there are too many reasons these days not to hit the gym: working on TLT, planning the wedding, going out with friends, and all the big and small surprises life throws at me. And sometimes I just want to spend the day on the couch in front of the TV. Add a longer recovery time from workouts – nights out, too – and it's sometimes very difficult to hit the gym.
This past Christmas season, I took a break from working out. I usually do this because there are too many events, errands to run and too much unhealthy yet tasty food to eat. So, there was too little time to work out. As New Year's approached, though, I knew I needed a bigger incentive to get me working out.
To help me with the goal of getting back to the gym and staying there consistently, I decided in late 2008 to run a race. The race I chose is only a 5-mile run, but it's important to me. It's the 10th Annual Father's Day Race Against Prostate Cancer. I've had three family members who have had prostate cancer. Thankfully, all of them survived, but as a tribute to them, I want to run this race. Since there is still a lot about prostate cancer that still needs to be learned, I want to do everything I can to fight it – especially since I am statistically more at risk. Whether that means raising money for research and cure, or just living a healthy lifestyle and staying in shape to reduce the risk that I’ll get prostate cancer.

The view when I'm training.
I've been back to the gym since March. It hasn't been as frequent as I'd like, but I'm getting there. I'm also jogging around my neighborhood a lot more. The warm weather has helped with that. And if things go well in the Father’s Day race, maybe I'll participate in more races.
