Traveling Around The Travel Show

April 3rd, 2009 | Dean Arrindell

The New York Times Travel Show was held at the Jacob Javits Center a few weekends ago. (Ok, it was more than a few weekends ago.) It was the first group outing Devin, Stephen and I took in a while. It was also the first travel show, or convention of any kind, for The Longest Trip.

The mission: Find deals, perhaps a few contacts, and some ideas for places to go.

The Results: No deals, some coupons, registered for a few contests (I've already started getting junk mail) and took home a lot of brochures.

I did get a few ideas for trips, though. It's been nearly a decade since I visited Montreal and it’s about time to go back. In the other direction from NYC, I didn’t have a clue that Loudon County, VA, not too far from my hometown in the D.C. Area, has wineries. Those two places are doable this year. Places like Australia, the Andalucia region of Spain, and the Czech Beer Festival, with every beer costing about $2.00, may have to wait.

The exhibitors at the show pulled out all the stops to get folks in the mood to travel. There were conventional things like live performances and food tastings, and even a tequila tasting. There were also several cock-your-head-to-the-side-in-confusion-type stunts. I'm still trying to figure out why there was a man on stilts at the New Jersey booth. And there was a Bob Marley birthday cake on display at the Jamaica booth. (We didn't stay for the cutting.)

And because of the Travel Show’s neighbor, there was a wookie sighting.

Check out what we saw..

Hey fellows, It is nice to know that you guys were out and about looking at travel info. Well what is the best travel bargain for these economic times. I bet you guys can't answer that!
Stay on the job and give me some info about that and I am not into any traditional trips, find something unique and unbelievable.

Hi Soma. The deals are out there. Check the airlines and the travel websites and you'll find them. I found some packages to Vegas and Miami at great prices on Expedia. Deals for exotic trips may be harder to find (and what one person considers exotic might be bland to another), but they're surely out there, too.
