Avon to Avon

As I rise on this last day in my little spot in Heaven, I end where I began. Avon, North Carolina, The Outer Banks. I first discovered this place when I was a junior in high school (a shout out to my fellow Magruder Colonels!) when my friend Brandon and his family took me to Duck, NC. I had just gotten back from my stint at Fork Union Military Academy (Summer school, military style. What joy!) and I was transformed into to a giant OBX fan. I've been here every year since, sometimes more than once.
I can still remember that first trip like it was yesterday, underage drinking and skinny-dipping with the girls next door. Youth, wasted on the young. So true. The night was so clear you could see the red and blue stars and every streak of light under the sky. It's one of the last places on Earth you can still drive on the beach. Oh yes, I will be buying another Jeep as soon as possible.

This, too, is coming to an end, but I am not sad in the least. A new life has begun and it's time to start living it. I originally wanted to start this whole thing here, my favorite place. But it seems more fitting to end up here. I have a plan, and this is not the final trip.
Things are still progressing with the TV pilot, and more trips and more writing are in the works. First, though, I need to raise some cash and take care of home and hearth. Exciting stuff.
For the last few hours here, there are a few more things to do. We'll hit the beach for one last day. We owe it to the Atlantic to bathe in her one last time. It's one last chance to feel our salty skin tighten in the breeze on the way home. Then, drink wonderful wine and debate the world with dear friends.
I haven't touched on the music on this trip, but I've been saving some moments along the way.
- "One Prairie Outpost" by Carbon Leaf playing while we rolled through Kansas.
- Steve Windwood's "Back in the High Life Again" gently pouring out of my speakers along the PCH.
- And now, Colin Hay's "Waiting For My Real Life to Begin."
Perfect.
Avon, Colorado is where we first stopped. Avon, North Carolina is the last stop.. at least for now.
Enjoy your journey. Thanks for reading mine.
