Being A Tourist

August 17th, 2009 | Jeff Zutant

I'm hungover. Plain and simple. I know I need to write this, but all I want to do is crawl back into bed. We are in downtown San Francisco and last night is a blur, but I wanted to see what the famous beat poets did and how they struggled to write their masterpieces. Alan Ginsburg, Jack Kerouac, and even The Grateful Dead. Turns out they were just drunk or high which, from this point of view, gives me hope.

As I slowly drag my bloodshot eyes across this city's skyline, I realized that I have to be a tourist today and see all the things I didn't see last night. I need to ride on a cable car. I need to have some crabs (being from Maryland, they better be good) at Fisherman's Wharf, and ride my bike down Lombard Street. Maybe I need a Bloody Mary.

So, this past month has taught me to live life outside the normal parameters, and has shown that patience will win out. The Jeep is still in limbo and the "new" truck (which we will call Hank from this point on) is making some loud noises. But hey, I'm still here and there's no point in worrying about anything. So I will just sit back and try to enjoy the rest of this trip. I have not sent out a single resume, and I know there are some decisions that have to be made pretty soon. But I am changed, and I will continue to change as long as I can hold onto this sense of wonder and just move forward.

The last few days have been spent camping down the coast. This is not the Atlantic. Somehow, the Pacific is more powerful. The chill in the air and jagged edge of this coastline makes this body of water seem more alive, and less inviting than what I am used to. I may change my tune, though, once I see the golden beaches of Southern California.

So, I need to "Cowboy Up" (as a woman from Wyoming once told me), get dressed, and see this city.

Just another day in the life, right?
