Caribbean Of The West

July 22nd, 2009 | Jeff Zutant

I am sitting at a picnic table on the shore of Bear Lake, UT. The breeze is perfect and the blue-green water of the lake makes my mind wander to the Bahamas or Jamaica. They call Bear Lake the "Caribbean of the West" because of the color of the water. Deposits of limestone and other minerals have made this 112-square-mile lake seem misplaced. I'm a mile up and the mountains that surround this area give it a feel that you should not be seeing this. It's simply amazing.

Our campsite is named "Cottonwood" after the Cottonwood trees all around site. They're dropping their seeds all around and it looks like snow. Add this together and it's surreal.

We heard about this place from a man at the Moab information building. We asked where to stay on the way to Yellowstone, and he sent us here. I wish I had asked his name so I could thank him. A place that was supposed to be nothing more than a stopover has suddenly become more. Jeremy and I are looking at home prices.

Yesterday was amazing in a different way. It was 4-mile hike in 108-degree of desert, but the scenery made it bearable. These stone arches that were formed so long ago, still can conjure up thoughts of the divine. Jeremy and I were wondering what the first couple of cowboys must have been thinking when they saw this place for the first time on horseback.

Leaving the desert in a black Jeep with no a/c can lead one to question his choice of vehicle, but then we climbed into the mountains and I realized I had made the right choice after all. I think we are going to stay a while and just rest. This place will be difficult to leave.
