See It Once

Jeremy and I have been in Yellowstone National Park for two days and it's time to get moving. I am sitting in the guest services area near Old Faithful and have some time to jot down some more thoughts. Our next destination will be Crater Lake, Oregon by way of Montana. I'm not sure how far it is or how long it will take, but I figure we will spend the night somewhere in Montana. Then we'll head down the coast to eventually meet up with my brother in Vegas!!!

As for Utah, Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons in Idaho: Amazing! I know I have mentioned this before, but around every corner is another vista that makes you take notice. I've seen geysers blowing off steam and the devastation that forest fire can bring. Then I was awed by the rebirth of the forest. It's the nature of fire. It cleans up the old and allows the new to flourish. I was also 40 yards from a grizzly. The topless Jeep offers little cover. So, no matter how close to the Jeep the park ranger wanted us to stand, if the bear wanted us, we were his for the taking.

Very close to a grizzly.

"Tatonka" (aka bison).

Yellowstone is the first national park in the world. No other country had ever deemed it necessary to create one until they saw this place. Sure, it's touristy and contrived at times, but you can't fake the raw power of this place. The churning of the forces below that powers all of the geysers and steam valves everywhere are still strong. Throw in some grizzly bears, bison (or as Jeremy says "tatonka," for you Dances with Wolves fans), eagles, pelicans, mule deer and it's a hell of a place. And you need to see it once. So, go. Ignore the nightmare stories of, "You need reservations a year in advance." It's crap. If you want to stay in the lodge or hotel, well, yeah. Maybe. But pack the car (or Jeep), grab a tent and some marshmallows, and go!
