Top Of My List

August 2nd, 2009 | Jeff Zutant

(via Facebook, MySpace, Digg, email and more)

Having just left Crater Lake, Oregon, we are 4289 miles into the trip and heading to the coast to have one of those magical moments in life: driving the Pacific Coast Highway. We are going to see a friend who lives in Mendocino, CA where we can take a break for a couple days and get the Jeep fixed. We hope. Unfortunately, it looks like my plans for meeting my brother, cousins, and Dean (one of the proprietors of this fine website), alas, twas not to be.

But where there are lemons, yada, yada, yada.. (God, I miss "Seinfeld.") The old girl is holding up fine, but she needs some TLC. I talked to my warranty people and the Jeep should be pretty easy to fix. Since it's old, though, parts aren't just lying around. They have to be ordered. Which means more time in Cali with great people, wine and weather!!!

Crater Lake

Enough with what's ahead. Let's talk about what I just left behind. The last I left you fine people, we were headed to Crater Lake. It's something to behold. A caldera (that's a volcanic basin) caused by a eruption 7,700 years ago, the 1,970-foot lake is a shade of blue that Jeremy and I could not describe to friends. But what a sight! I spent my day riding around the lake taking a lot of pictures.

While there, I inquired about employment opportunities. I don't have an environmental sciences background, but I do have experience in the service industry and in management. I'm single, willing to travel and love being in these places. So, I spoke to a gentleman who works for the U.S. Park Service and, apparently, I have some desired skills. Who knew? It's seasonal, I can work anywhere and the boredom factor is very low.. along with the cash. But if that's what I wanted in life – money – I would just jump right back into what I was doing. There are lots of jobs out there, but I don't want just a job. Not anymore.

Riding around the lake, I met people from everywhere, including a young man named Jacob. He filled me in on what it's like to live in Oregon, and I must tell you, it's quickly climbing to the top of my list of where I may end up. Unlike a lot of places filled with people from somewhere else, Oregon seems to be a destination, not an escape. You have the desert, the mountains, the ocean, the forest and a major city, Portland, which I hear is great. Unfortunately, we are going south and will not see it. (Sorry, Dana.)

A sampling of where we've been.

I've started collecting those cheesy refrigerator magnets for the side of the Jeep. It now looks like a WWII fighter plane. We're about to enter our 15th state, so it's almost time for another magnet.

California, here we come. Oregon, I may return.
