Fall New Jersey RV Show

Yeah, yeah. I know. I'm working a little out of order regarding the planning steps to my possible mobile life. Today was the Fall New Jersey RV Show in Edison, NJ. It was just too close of a drive to pass up, especially with the thought of such a life growing stronger every day.

I was greeted by the smell of kettle corn out in the parking lot of the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center located at 97 Sunfield Avenue. Once inside, I filled out some sort of raffle for some sort of discount from some sort of camping organization. I bought my $8.00 ticket–make that $7.00, I had a coupon.

My first task would be to ask a million questions. Well, that was a bit daunting to say the least. To ease my way into things, I simply walked around the place, gazing at the large Fifth Wheel and Class A vehicles that I didn't even dare step into. Why? Have you seen these things? They can reach a level where the word massive doesn't do them justice.

Seriously, I've lived in places smaller than these things. There were models that started out the size of a city bus, then extended out, back and up (yes even up. I saw one with a second floor) to become literal houses with wheels. I simply want a mobile office/living space that is comfortable to drive and gets more than five miles to the gallon.

A woman who sells candy asked me why I was just wandering around. I told her, this is my basic plan whenever I come upon a new place. I try to get the lay of the land before hunting.

I knew in my head the size vehicle I'd be comfortable with–a small Class B. It has to be large enough for comfort, but fuel efficient enough to be worth driving. Up to this point, my research had been limited to websites, brochures and videos, but I really started liking the concept behind the Roadtrek vehicles.

Essentially, they build converted vans on steroids. The thing seats up to eight and sleeps up to four. and has a stand-up shower with a nice sized cooking and eating area. There was one nagging problem eating at me as I walked around today. Roadtrek was a no-show. This kinda pissed me off at first since I was not aware of anyone else making this size of Class B vehicle.

Luckily I came across David and Patrick at the Colonial display. They're from Lakewood, NJ and deal in Winnebago, Itasca and Airstream. David showed me the Itasca Era. and Patrick showed me the Airstream Interstate. Both of which are the same concept as the Roadtrek vehicles.
