I'm Arriving When?!

My sister and her husband are going to Las Vegas next month. They had a specific set of criteria regarding their flight out. Most importantly, they wanted a nonstop flight. Fair enough. Unfortunately this gets them into Vegas after 8:00 on their first night.

Normally I would crack jokes and make fun of them for such a silly oversight, but I can't. I've found myself in the same boat. You know, the one where you're in such a rush to get that deal that minor details like time and space become irrelevant. At least for a moment. Until you're ripped back in to reality at the site of your e-ticket.

OK, here's what happened…

I'm off to Key West at the end of this month. I really needed a few days on a beach, near a bar and away from NYC.

Decompress. Decompose. Deregulate.

I got the hotel I wanted. I got the price I wanted. Considering this is still peak season for a place that is expensive anyway, three nights with roundtrip flight for $1050 was pretty sweet. And my main criterion (besides price) was I wanted to be able to fly from Newark at a time when I could take a train to and from Hoboken.

Found it! Only five seats left?? Shit! Hurry! Got it!

Wait … when do I arrive in Key West? 6:00 p.m.? Man that sucks. What's this? A three-hour layover in Fort Meyers? I didn't notice that!

Lesson learned.

There are more factors to consider besides price and arrival/departure times. For a few dollars more I could have flown out at 6:00 a.m.. Yes that would have meant that I'd be driving and parking at the airport, but I would not have lost nearly a whole day along the way.

I thought about switching flights, but those few dollars before booking became many dollars after. So I'll just deal with it on this trip. I'm going to Key West for crying out loud! So what if I lose a few hours? It'll still be the trip I need it to be.

Stay tuned for updates
