Key West: Sunset Dinner Cruise

There are plenty of sunset options to choose from in Key West. The least appealing for me was fighting the crowds at Mallory Square. Less objectionable are the many cruises that venture out daily. When you are booking, be sure to ask what type of cruise it is, there are several choices.
You got your drunken party boats, quiet sightseeing boats and dinner cruises. The dinners are not as regular as the others, only sailing on certain nights of the week. As luck would have it, I was booking on a Tuesday which was one of the nights.

The Liberty Clipper—completed in 1983—is a 125-foot steel-constructed replica of a 19th-century clipper. She summers in Boston. For the rest of the year, she's in Key West. The crew lives on the ship full time.

As the music of a solo steel drum played, The Liberty Clipper is pushed out from the pier. The captain went over safety points, describing the amenities on board. Then came the time to raise sails. The crew needed some of the guests to grab lines and heave. I could see why as I gazed around this tall ship, but my low-grade fever and aggressive laziness caused me to sit this one out.

The crew and volunteers heaved away as the sails whipped and cracked and fought. I kept picturing someone going overboard. Then, with a loud snap, the sails caught the wind and but for a flutter we were quietly off engines.

As our captain got us cruising in the wind, it was time to eat.
