The Longest Trip Sneak Peek Party

November 20th, 2008 | Stephen Bailey

Dean, Devin and I know that there are many factors involved with launching a site such as this. Money, planning, a certain set of balls to accept the eventual escape from corporate life and so on. Equally important however is the support of friends.

A fact of life when launching any website is (obviously) the need for eyes, especially the eyes of like-minded peers who will hopefully spread the word about said website. We three are in a unique position of advantage in that many (if not most) of our friends are in media. Writers, producers, artists, etc.

So we decided the right way to inspire them to be as excited as we are about this site was to throw a small party. Well, an informal happy hour really. Each guest got more than just the distinct pleasure of our company and moderately priced drinks. They got a goody bag complete with business cards and candy.

A small bribe to woo them into telling other friends about us.

We held our special 'sneak peak' launch of the site at Solas (232 E. 9th St, NYC) on November 13, 2008. It's a decent place for this type of gathering with several rooms to choose from. We had the main room, upstairs. Posh but not too posh, the decor is just the right hue of dark atmosphere in brick red and heavy wood.

Candles on the tables lined with a combo of wooden chairs and cush ottomans added to the comfort. Funky hanging paper lamps that looked like weird ice cream cones. And tonight the walls were accented with artsy photos of dancers. Plus one lone black plastic and metal chair that I so wanted to steal. But I didn't.

It was a fun night and I'm glad we did it. Even though the weeks leading up to it were a bit stressful. Would we have the site done? Were we happy with my design? Would anyone care enough to show. As for the latter, I'm glad to say they did show.

As for the rest, to be honest, if we do this right, the site will never be done. It will change as our 'trips' change. For a web geek like me, this just adds to the excitement, giving me even more to look forward to.
